Tips for Decorating with Christmas Garland
The Christmas season is one that so many people look forward to each year. However, while it is full of laughter, making great memories, and tons of fun, there is still one concern most adults have: the safety that comes with Christmas. While there are more robberies and break ins during the Christmas season because people know that tons of gifts are waiting inside of homes, there are also more electrical fires and the like that happen during the Christmas season. While you can have an alarm system and make sure that you do not share all the goodies that you are buying on social media to avoid attracting attention, when it comes to your garland other Christmas decor, we do have some safety tips that you may want to remember to ensure your home stays safe.
Choose the Right Garland Type
- Be sure that garland is not hung in an area that embers from a fireplace can catch it on fire. While tons of people hang garland on their fireplaces, you have to make sure that the distance from the fire to the mantle is not going to be an issue. If you do have a fire running, feel the garland from time to time to see if it is getting warm. If it is, chances are it is too close, so think about another location that you can use your garland in to avoid a fire risk.
- If you use real trees be sure that they stay well watered. Dry trees are one of the biggest fire starters during the Christmas season.
- Don’t leave your Christmas lights turned on if you are not at home. This is just a way to take precautions so that the lights do not catch anything on fire by getting it too warm. The good news is that most new light strings out there are going to have built in safety features to ensure that they are not going to get hot enough to melt an artificial tree or to start a fire with a real tree.
- Pay attention to your heat registers and your decor. Never place something over your heat register, as it could get too hot and end up melting if it is artificial or even burning if the heat is too much.
- When hanging stockings, you may want to reconsider hanging these on the fireplace, as this can create a fire hazard if you are not careful. Many people find that they have burn marks on their stockings when hanging these near a fire, which does mean that embers have burned these.
Basically, when it comes to any decor you use, whether this be garland or even the wreaths that you hang in your home, be mindful of where you are placing these items. You will find that with the proper care, you can avoid situations that make your Christmas devastating. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to preventing fires and other damage during the Christmas season.
